was, he didn't know. "I guess there is a euphoria that takes over when you buy a car," he said.
When you achieve that sculpted steel portion of the California dream, the euphoria blinds you to mere numbers. The curious thing is that Kemnitzer is an attorney who represents consumers in suits against auto dealers. One suit involved a scam run by a Southern California dealer who sold cars to poor people and stuck them with inflated vehicle license fees.
"The dealer charged them vehicle license fees of 10 percent and would send the money on to Sacramento," Kemnitzer said. "The bureaucrats would puzzle about these overpayments and then return them to the dealer."
So Gray Davis isn't the king of the cash register artists. And maybe a lot of us will have to move on.
As Lexus dealer Towle put it: "I guess you'll have to live your California dream in Oregon."
